Interest Rates for Educational Loan Consolidation to Remain at Historic Low
While interest rates on home mortgages and other loans are going up, according to recent USATODAY.com article, rates on student loans likely will remain at historic lows when rates are reset July 1. Graduates with student loans will be able to lock in a rate of below 3.4% for up to 30 years at no cost. Borrowers who consolidate during their 6-month grace period, the time between graduation and when actual repayment is to begin, will be able to lock in a rate of about 2.75% if T-bill rates remain unchanged. Rates for parents with PLUS loans also will remain low and drop if T-bill rates do not change.
APTA members can take advantage of this unprecedented opportunity through the APTA-endorsed Education Loan Program, administered by EAS Group LLC (EAS). Working with its partner, the American Student Loan Consolidation Corporation (ASLCC), EAS offers members access to professional loan counselors who review individual circumstances to ensure that borrowers are informed and receive the "best rates" available.
APTA strongly encourages members to educate themselves about the specifics of loan consolidation by calling ASLCC at 800/741-4704. Be sure to reference APTA to receive all program benefits when you call. You also may visit the APTA Education Loan Program Web site to learn more about consolidation and to apply online.
