Campaign school helps credit union people win elections
People & Places
Four strategies are essential to running a successful campaign for elected office, political experts told credit union leaders at a campaign school presented by CUNA and the California Credit Union League.
The winning strategies:
1) Develop a budget;
2) Create an image;
3) Gauge voters' concerns;
4) Communicate a few simple, consistent themes.
Before running, Buddy Gill, President of Gill Consulting in Austin, Texas, advises prospective candidates to do their homework: Prepare a detailed biography, write a brief statement describing why you want to run, and review election results over the past six years. Then build a list of at least 200 people who will contribute money.
Also start counting your votes, says Richard Gose, CUNA VP of Political Affairs. Ask yourself whether you can turn out a high percentage of members from your own political party, and how well you will appeal to swing voters.
CUNA is presenting campaign schools in conjunction with leagues to recruit and advise credit union candidates for local, state and federal offices.
As California League VP Chris Kerecman put it, "One sure way to know that legislative leaders hear the voice of credit unions is to elect our own."
