Orientation

UTMB nurses are members of an interdisciplinary health care team, where the nursing focus is moving toward primary accountability for patient care. Nurses have the opportunity to stay at the bedside and to advance through the Clinical Ladder Program. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive and individualized orientation that prepares you to fulfill role responsibilities. A competency-based approach utilizes the performance-based development system to assess your critical thinking, interpersonal, and technical abilities. Once baseline information is obtained, feedback is provided to you, your nurse manager, and your preceptor, and an individualized orientation program is planned and designed to help ensure your success on the job.

Availability for shift rotation is required, although nurses choose permanent evening or night assignments. Several patient care areas and all intensive care units are on 12-hour shifts.
