The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) is one of Texas' leading teaching, patient care and research centers, as well as a leading health sciences resource center for the nation. UTMB's diverse medical complex includes six hospitals with more than 700 patient beds, numerous community clinics, a comprehensive emergency room and Level I Trauma Center. Its four schools of advanced learning offer a variety of specialization options including critical care, medical/surgical, clinical research, labor and delivery, 08/GYN, renal, psychiatry, pediatrics, rehabilitation, correctional health care, gastroenterology, cardiothoracic and cardiology, and ambulatory and emergency care.
EDUCATION
With more than 100 years of progressive nursing education to its credit, UTMB offers a multitude of continuing educational opportunities to complement our exciting and challenging work environment. The UTMB School of Nursing is one of UTMB's four schools, and is Texas' oldest nursing school. With an R.N. to B.S.N. Flexible Option Track that is geared to meet the educational needs of R.N.s, its master's degree program offers three majors: acute care nurse practitioner, primary care nurse practitioner (with four specialty tracks), and nursing administration. One hundred percent reimbursement of in-state tuition is available to full-time employees. UTMB also supports its nurses in completion of degree requirements through its Work/School Programs (R.N. to B.S.N. and B.S.N. to M.S.N.).
BENEFITS
UTMB offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience and education as well as an excellent benefits package. Liberal shift differentials and on-call pay are also available in designated areas. Employees can choose from various health and dental insurance plans. Other benefit options include vision insurance, life insurance, deferred compensation, long-term disability insurance, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, tax-sheltered annuities, credit union membership and retirement programs.
PROFESSIONAL ENVIRONMENT
UTMB nurses are members of an interdisciplinary health care team, with the nursing focus moving toward primary accountability for patient care. UTMB nurses also have the opportunity to stay at the bedside while advancing through the Clinical Ladder Program. Our goal at UTMB School of Nursing is to provide a comprehensive and individualized orientation that prepares students to fulfill role responsibilities. A competency-based approach utilizes the performance-based development system designed to assess critical thinking, interpersonal and technical abilities. Once baseline information is obtained, feedback is provided to the nurse manager and preceptor, and the individualized orientation program is planned and designed to help ensure job success.
Availability for shift rotation is required, although some nurses choose permanent evening or night assignments. Several patient care areas and all intensive care units are on 12-hour shifts.
UNIQUE FEATURES
UTMB is located on the Gulf Coast's beautiful Galveston Island, just 45 minutes from Houston. Galveston features plenty of cultural attractions, outdoor activities and specialty shopping, as well as affordable housing in a pleasant and friendly community atmosphere. From Galveston's Mardi Gras and Christmas celebrations, the historic Strand District and sunny beaches; to the metropolitan atmosphere of nearby Houston, UTMB Nurses and School of Nursing students usually find their after work hours equally as exciting as their workplace, creating a healthy, well-rounded educational and work experience.
UTMB is an EO/AA employer M/F/D/V. To protect the health of its employees, students, patients and visitors, UTMB maintains a smoke-free campus.
