PRIME CUT
ONE GREAT HAIRCUT, FIVE TERRIFIC STYLES
When it's time to hang up the work clothes and head for fun this summer, you'll want a versatile look that's ready to travel in style. We asked New York City stylist Ruth Sanchez of El Yunque Oba to give us a cut that can be worked and reworked with a few styling tricks. The result: sleek face-framing layers that go the distance, from a controlled blunt bob to a voluminous curly 'fro.

COOL SUMMER HAIR ACCESSORIES
Dorian Webb's decorative chignon sticks add feminine fancy.
Frederic Fekkai's satin ponytail wrap offers a chic alternative to the everyday scrunchie.
Beverly Hills Teen collection's chopstick and barrette.
For a candlelight dinner, this sort, full Afro-esque do is perfect. Hand-comb medium-size roller-set curls for as much shape and volume as you wish. Try Paul Mitchell's Soft Spray for hold without hardness.
Enjoy no-fuss vacation sight-seeing with large flat twists. Sanchez twisted large sections from the crown to the top of the head, then lifted them with a rattail comb and secured them with small hairpins, leaving the back sleek and chic. Tip: For gloss and polish that don't weigh hair down, try Avlon's KeraCare Silken Seal Liquid Sheen.
Twists are fun and easy, great for any summer activity. Simply part hair into small sections, twist and, if you wish, secure ends with ribbons or bands.
Sensuous curls, perfect for cocktails on deck. were created with a large curling iron. To maintain, pin-curl each coil and set overnight. The next day, release the coils as shown, or leave the pins in, top with a colorful scarf and slide on movie-star shades for an afternoon of glamorous shopping.
WORKING IT WET
Go from the pool to the street without even thinking About a blow-dryer. These great styles, created with The right products and techniques, do the trick.
TRESS RELEASE
Diane Bailey of Tendrils in Brooklyn styled Lisa's long wavy hair into two-strand twists. To maintain sleekness and avoid the deadly frizzles, try Paul Mitchell's Slick Works. Once completely dry, unwrap twists for a fun, crinkly 'fro.
TWIST AND SHOUT
Using human-hair extensions with a kinky texture and butterscotch highlights, Diane twisted Hawa's hair tightly at the roots and left the ends free for a hand-combed style that keeps its shape whether wet or dry. Paul Mitchell's Foaming Pomade penetrates wet hair easily and helps it keep texture and shape.
SHORT AND SLEEK
To maintain Erickka's relaxed pixie cut, New York City stylist Kimberly Hendrickson of the Crown and Glow Salon designed a prepool prep with a flat iron and Dudley's water-resistant Hair Wave Dressing to mold and shape hair. The cut and the product ensure that the style can be hand-combed back into shape even after coming in contact with water.
pro tip
How to Fake a Smooth Hairline Between Touch-ups
The pros pick Elasta QP's Glaze as the hands-down favorite for keeping roots superstraight. Stylist Shirlena Allen rubs a dime-size amount in the hand before applying to exposed roots and uses a small-tooth comb on roots while blow-drying for supersmoothness. Oscar James swears by Let's Jam Slick Stuff. "Give the hairline a good brushing after using Slick Stuff," he says. "Tie hair up with a scarf, wait 15 minutes and your roots are as good as gold."
ROAD TEST
Salon Conditioners
I have lots of thick natural hair, so conditioning is a must. But I was never one to drop cash on stuff that runs down the drain until my editor enlisted me, the resident product junkie, to investigate salon conditioners. Professional stylists agree that conditioning prevents breakage and nourishes hair and scalp. L.A. stylist Shirlena Allen of Just You Salon recommends Dudley's Protein Panthenol Conditioner. Dudley's penetrates easily and rinses well, and my ends felt smoother. L.A. stylist Neeko of Sessions and I both gave Bumble and Bumble's Super Rich Conditioner the thumbs-up. It smells great and is a terrific detangler. Olive Lee Benson of Olive's Salon in Boston touts Namaste Laboratories' Organic Root Stimulator Hair Mayonnaise, which reduces frizzies. Full of essential oil, this is a powerhouse treatment.
