L.V. confidential - National Association Broadcasters convention at Las Vegas, Nevada
Another year has gone by. My my my! Here we are back in Las Vegas for our annual "Fib Fest."
It is really great to be able to see all my friends again. Some new, some old, and some with no time. We're all so busy during the year that we'll hardly have time to tell each other all the stories and jokes that we have saved up. Let's see ... Andy had a baby, Alan sold his business, Steve bought a business, Jim went video, Bill opened in Santa Monica, Joey had another baby, Tom's moving downtown, Mooney calmed down (NOT!), Jen had a hole in one, Jack got married, David retired, Jessica finally took a vacation ... you know, the usual.
Let me mention that we all come to the desert to celebrate the NAB convention. Well, not all of us. Some play cards, some eat, some play golf and some actually do go to the convention center. Actually a lot of people go to see the "stuff." Last year I think I heard there were over 100,000 attendees.
The National Association of Broadcasters. The outlets for our and our clients' work. All those radio and TV stations and networks and cable systems that set the standards and benchmarks that define our final product. People come from all over the world to try to get a glimpse of the latest, hear a leak about the newest, try to get a sneak preview of next year's stuff, make deals to buy three of something that is still in alpha, look around trying to find someone that bought the same thing that they did last year to ask if theirs worked or if it was even delivered.
This year you'll be pleased to know that there won't be as much dust. The Bellagio has been completed and is the most expensive hotel on the strip. If someone says they are staying there, they are definitely buying. See if you can get a loan from them.
The Rio is really nice. It has a great cigar store, but it's also pricey. The Desert Inn has been completed and if you want to play golf there, tell them you are a guest of John Palestrini.
The food situation in Las Vegas has gotten a lot better. Burger King's new fries are a big hit!
The first year I went to the NAB I didn't know what to expect. I wore a nice suit every day. The second, the same. The next year I wore a sport coat. But each year the show gets a little bigger. This year there are at least three venues. They are not next to one another and you know the story about the buses. I am wearing running shoes and golf attire in case there is an emergency threesome in need of a fourth.
Seriously. Stamina plays a big role at the show. If you can stand up all day and still not succumb to the allure of some not-yet-manufacturered one off item, you are a big winner. Sometimes you drag your butt back to the bar at your hotel and it feels like you just went 10 rounds with Mike Tyson in the parking lot of Caesar's Palace.
This year I raised my purchasing budget to just over $9 million. That should cover the hotels, the meals and the car rental and all the stuff I need to buy at the NAB Store. With the leftover cash I'm looking to buy a nice couch.
Would I ever miss an NAB? No way! I don't ever want people to say to me, "Howie, you should a been there. We saw Elvis at the Sony booth."
