Bledsoe, Parcells reunited in Dallas

Drew Bledsoe set passing records and reached the Super Bowl as a young quarterback playing for Bill Parcells in New England. Nearly a decade later, the duo will try doing it again with the Dallas Cowboys.

Bledsoe was given a three-year contract with the Cowboys. Financial terms were not immediately available.

"Bill wants me here, and being the starter. I anticipate that being the case and not for one year," Bledsoe during a Wednesday news conference, one day after he was released by the Buffalo Bills.

The Bills told Bledsoe he would be cut last week and he said then that "Dallas is intriguing for obvious reasons." Once Parcells was interested, too, the 33-year-old apparently chose not to seriously pursue other starting jobs.

Parcells was running the Patriots when he made Bledsoe the No. 1 overall pick in 1993. They reached the Super Bowl following the 1996 season, losing to Green Bay, then Parcells left for the New York Jets.

ETC.: The Miami Dolphins released quarterback Jay Fiedler, ending his five-year run as the much-maligned successor to Dan Marino. ... Tim Ruskell, assistant general manager of the Atlanta Falcons, was hired the Seattle Seahawks' president of football operations, completing a major housecleaning of the team's front office. Ruskell also will fill the role of general manager. ... The Eagles tendered restricted free agent Brian Westbrook, giving Philadelphia the right to match any offer he receives or a first-round pick from any team that signs the running back. The one-year tender will cost the team $1.43 million, but the Eagles have the option of signing the third- year player to a long-term deal.

Soccer

The Galaxy acquired Guatemalan national team captain Guillermo Ramirez on loan from Club Social y Deportivo Municipal in his nation's first division.

Ramirez, a 26-year-old midfielder, has scored 10 goals in 58 games with Guatemala's national team and 80 goals with Municipal, his team from 1995-2000 and since 2002.

Tennis

Two-time defending champion Roger Federer came back to edge Czech qualifier Ivo Minar, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 7-6 (5), in the first round of the Dubai Open.

Andre Agassi, fifth-seeded Tommy Robredo, No. 6 Nikolay Davydenko and No. 8 Ivan Ljubicic also won.

ETC.: Former Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez ended Anastasia Myskina's hopes for a third straight Qatar Open title with a 6-4, 7- 5 upset. Martinez reached the quarterfinals, where she'll face Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia, who ousted sixth-seeded Elena Bovina of Russia, 6-0, 3-6, 6-3. Meanwhile, top-seeded Amelie Mauresmo, No. 2 Maria Sharapova and No. 4 Alicia Molik advanced, but No. 5 Patty Schnyder lost. ... Third-seed Mario Ancic cruised to the quarterfinals of the Tennis Channel Open in Scottsdale, Ariz., defeating Australian Mark Philippoussis, 6-1, 7-6 (3).

Jurisprudence

An appeals court ruled that the Oakland Raiders are not entitled to a new trial in the team's $1.2 billion conspiracy lawsuit against the NFL.

The three-judge panel also affirmed a 2001 jury verdict that the league did not interfere with the team's negotiations to build a stadium at Hollywood Park.

In addition, it reinstated the jury's decision that the Raiders did not own the right to put an NFL team in Los Angeles and thus were not entitled to compensation from the league for freeing up those rights by moving to Oakland.

ETC.: A homeless man accused of stalking tennis star Anna Kournikova was ordered to permanently stay at least 1,000 feet away from her if he gets out of jail. ... Olympic skier Bill Johnson pleaded innocent to all charges related to his confrontation with police during a traffic stop this month in Troutdale, Ore. Johnson won Olympic gold during the 1984 Sarajevo games, becoming the first American to win the downhill skiing event. He was arrested and charged with two counts of attempted assault on a police officer and two counts of resisting arrest. ... Argentine soccer star Diego Maradona was ordered to pay about $39 million in back taxes after an Italian court rejected his appeal.

Motorsports

Robby Gordon Motorsports was fined $50,000 and docked 25 championship points, the most severe penalty for violations at Daytona International Speedway.

NASCAR fined crew chief Bob Temple and deducted points from car owner Jim Smith for an unapproved intake manifold on his Chevrolet on Feb. 11 during the initial Nextel Cup inspection for the season- opening Daytona 500.

Gordon, driver and part owner of the new team, failed to make the starting lineup for the Daytona 500 and has no points. Smith earned 31 based on qualifying results.

NASCAR penalized 10 teams.

Miscellany

Daily Breeze sports reporter Bill Cizek was named a finalist in the annual Associated Press Sports Editors national contest.

Top 10 finalists were picked in the writing contest in six categories of all circulation divisions. Cizek's recognition came in the breaking news category (40,000-100,000 circulation), for a story he wrote while covering the Dodgers' playoff run.

The judging was conducted by members of APSE. Winners will be announced in late March.

ETC.: The defending WNBA champion Seattle Storm re-signed All- Star forward Lauren Jackson. ... Former Atlanta Braves outfielder Ron Gant was involved in a fatal wreck after a pickup truck turned in front of him not far from the Atlanta airport. Fulton County Police said James Allen, 74, of Douglasville apparently was trying to make a left turn Tuesday afternoon, cut into oncoming traffic and was struck by a sport utility vehicle driven by Gant. Allen died at the scene. Gant was not seriously injured, and no charges were expected, a police spokesman said.
